Russia Launches Massive Overnight Barrage on Ukraine, Casualties Reported

Ukraine endured one of Russia’s most extensive overnight aerial assaults, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirming the launch of 26 missiles and an unprecedented 597 drones. The widespread attacks spanned from the eastern Kharkiv and Sumy regions to the western Lviv region and Bukovyna, highlighting the broad reach of the intensified aggression.
Western Ukraine suffered the most severe impacts, particularly Lviv, Lutsk, and Chernivtsi, as reported by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. While Ukraine’s Air Force successfully intercepted 319 drones and 25 missiles, 258 decoy drones were also deployed, complicating defense efforts.
The devastating strikes resulted in casualties and widespread destruction. In Chernivtsi, at least two people were killed by debris, and 14 others were injured, with four in critical condition. The city experienced extensive damage to administrative and residential buildings, triggering multiple fires. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi described the attack as the most severe on the city since the invasion began, detailing damage to residential units, cars, and a kindergarten. One man was hospitalized, and several, including an 11-year-old boy, required medical treatment.
President Zelenskyy reiterated his urgent appeal to Western allies, stressing that the conflict can only be stopped through strength. He demanded swift decisions on additional sanctions and increased provisions of air defense systems, alongside investments in interceptor drones, to counter Russia’s escalating aerial campaign. This latest escalation coincides with European leaders’ recent discussions on new funding mechanisms for Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.
