A federal judge in Tennessee has ordered a new trial for three former Memphis police officers previously convicted on charges stemming from the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols in 2023. The significant development comes just five hours after the ruling, reigniting public attention on the high-profile case that sparked nationwide protests against police brutality.

U.S. District Judge Sheryl Lipman cited concerns over potential bias, following allegations that the judge presiding over the original federal trial may have suggested one of the defendants was involved with a gang. This perceived impartiality has led to the decision to grant a retrial for the officers involved.

Tyre Nichols, 29, died three days after a brutal encounter with police during a traffic stop in January 2023, where he was pepper-sprayed, kicked, and punched. Former officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith, Jr. were initially convicted of witness tampering but acquitted of the more severe charge of violating Mr. Nichols’s civil rights by causing his death. The new trial is expected to revisit these critical charges and the circumstances surrounding Nichols’s death.
