The U.S. government, under the current Trump administration, has announced it will provide military funeral honors for Ashli Babbitt, a U.S. Air Force veteran killed during the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. This decision, outlined in an August 15 letter from an Air Force under secretary, follows the administration’s agreement to pay nearly $5 million to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Babbitt’s family.

Babbitt, 35, was shot by an officer while attempting to breach a barricaded door inside the Capitol during the riot. Her death has elevated her to a symbolic figure among some Republicans. Matthew Lohmeier, Under Secretary of the Air Force, publicly supported the decision on social media platform X, calling it “long overdue” and sharing a post from conservative legal group Judicial Watch, which had advocated for the family after their request was reportedly denied by the previous Biden administration.

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed the offer of honors, stating the decision was made “after reviewing the circumstances” of Babbitt’s death. This move aligns with President Trump’s broader efforts to reframe the narrative surrounding the January 6 events.
