In a significant move to bolster federal authority, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced late Friday the immediate deployment of Justice Department agents to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. This directive comes in the wake of escalating violence targeting federal authorities, including a recent fatal shooting at an ICE field office in Dallas that left one detainee dead and two injured.

Bondi declared on X that DOJ agents would be dispatched to safeguard federal personnel and property, with a mandate to arrest any individuals engaged in federal crimes at or around ICE locations. While specific agencies were not named, the Justice Department oversees the FBI, DEA, U.S. Marshals Service, and ATF.

This action follows a reported surge in attacks against ICE agents, which the agency attributes to increased enforcement actions by the Trump administration concerning undocumented immigrants. Protests and clashes have become common at ICE operations nationwide.

Further escalating the response, Bondi has directed Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs) to investigate what she termed “domestic terrorism” related to these incidents. She emphasized that the Justice Department would pursue the most severe charges, including conspiracy, assault, civil disorder, and terrorism offenses, against all participants in such actions.

The Attorney General’s orders align with a memo signed by President Trump a day prior, calling for JTTF-led investigations into “political violence and intimidation.” The White House cited the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, previous attempts on Mr. Trump’s life, and increased attacks on ICE officers as justifications. Additionally, President Trump issued an executive order designating antifa a domestic terrorist organization, though the legal ramifications of this move remain unclear, given antifa’s decentralized nature and the absence of a federal charge for domestic terrorism.
