The United Nations is poised to reimpose extensive economic and military sanctions on Iran, effective 00:00 GMT on Sunday, September 28th. This critical development follows accusations from the UK, France, and Germany that Iran has failed to uphold its commitments under the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). A 30-day diplomatic window, triggered by the European powers’ letter to the UN Security Council last month, concluded without a resolution.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian vehemently condemned the impending international sanctions as “unfair, unjust, and illegal” during his recent address at the UN General Assembly. Efforts by China and Russia to delay the re-imposition by six months failed to garner sufficient support within the 15-member council.

The decision to renew sanctions comes a decade after they were initially lifted under the JCPOA and follows Iran’s escalation of banned nuclear activities, particularly after the United States, under then-President Donald Trump, withdrew from the deal in 2016. Tensions have further mounted after Iran barred IAEA inspectors from its nuclear facilities following alleged bombings by Israel and the US in June. Despite President Pezeshkian’s assurance this week that Iran would never seek a nuclear bomb, he stressed the need for security guarantees against attacks on its nuclear sites to normalize enrichment.

The reintroduced sanctions are comprehensive, encompassing an arms embargo, a ban on uranium enrichment, restrictions on ballistic missile activities, a freeze on assets and travel bans for Iranian figures, and authorization for countries to inspect Iranian cargo. These measures are expected to add significant strain to Iran’s economy, which was severely impacted by similar sanctions prior to the 2015 agreement.
