Houston is bracing for the upcoming arraignment of Masiullah Sahil, the man accused of fatally stabbing revered Afghan interpreter Abdul Niazi, set for August 12. The legal proceedings have ignited fierce outrage within the community and among Niazi’s supporters, fueled by revelations of prosecutorial missteps that led to Sahil’s temporary release from jail.

Abdul Niazi, a former U.S. military interpreter who lost both legs in Afghanistan and became a pillar of Houston’s Afghan community, was brutally murdered on March 26. Authorities allege Sahil, an Afghan national Niazi was assisting with immigration matters, stabbed him more than a dozen times out of frustration with the slow pace of the U.S. immigration system.

Adding to the tragedy, Sahil was ordered released on a personal recognizance bond last month after prosecutors failed to indict him within the three-month period required by Texas law. This decision drew immediate condemnation from Niazi’s family and friends. While Judge Emily Detoto ordered his release, the Harris County District Attorney’s office swiftly filed a new witness tampering charge the same day, keeping Sahil jailed on a $25,000 bond.

Niazi’s family and the Marines he served with are reeling, demanding an investigation into the district attorney’s handling of the case. “What if he’d gotten out and came and killed his wife and kids?” questioned Mohammad Bayan, a close friend of Niazi’s, highlighting the community’s fear and outrage. Niazi, a decorated combat interpreter who survived a bomb blast in Afghanistan, dedicated his life in Houston to helping newly resettled Afghans navigate complex immigration processes, often without charge.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has stated the situation is under review. As the August 12 arraignment approaches, the case continues to draw significant public attention, underscoring the profound impact of Niazi’s death and the contentious legal developments surrounding his accused killer.
