Eleven people were stabbed yesterday in a horrific attack at a Walmart store near Traverse City, with authorities confirming a 42-year-old male suspect is now in custody. The incident, which unfolded at the Grand Traverse Crossing mall location, left 11 individuals hospitalized, six of whom remain in critical condition at Munson Medical Center.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael D. Shea reported that the random stabbings began near the store’s checkout area. Of the 11 victims, six are male and five are female, with three requiring surgery. Emergency services responded swiftly to the 4:43 p.m. 911 call, with deputies arriving on scene within three minutes. Sheriff Shea also highlighted significant “citizen involvement” in helping to subdue the lone assailant, who reportedly used a standard folding knife.

The suspect, a Michigan resident whose identity has not yet been released, was apprehended by a sheriff’s deputy at the scene. The Walmart Supercenter remains closed as the Michigan State Police Crime Lab processes the extensive crime scene.

The community is reeling from the violence, which Sheriff Shea described as “very uncommon for our area.” Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino have both expressed their support, with Whitmer commending first responders for their swift actions. Munson Healthcare has also acknowledged the immense pressure on its emergency department while praising staff for their commendable response to the tragedy.
