Canada is actively re-evaluating its diplomatic relationship with Israel, following a recent attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar. Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated yesterday, Wednesday, that the attack in Doha was deemed “unacceptable,” particularly given Qatar’s ongoing efforts to broker peace in the Middle East.

This review comes as the European Commission, earlier today, announced intentions to reduce support for Israel and implement sanctions, with President Ursula von der Leyen outlining the plans. When questioned about potential Canadian sanctions against Israel, Anand indicated that the government is “continuing to evaluate our next steps.”

Under Prime Minister Mark Carney, who assumed office in January, Canada has demonstrated a notably firmer stance towards Israel. Carney had previously announced in July that Canada would officially recognize Palestinian statehood, a move that drew strong criticism from Israel. Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Carney condemned the Israeli air strike, describing it as an “intolerable expansion of violence” that risks broader regional escalation. He had also previously criticized Israel’s plan to take control of Gaza City last month.
