Europe is gripped by heightened tension following Poland’s downing of Russian drones and its subsequent call for an urgent NATO meeting. The incident, perceived as a direct threat to an EU member state, has dominated discussions among European Parliament members in Strasbourg, overshadowing the annual ‘State of the European Union’ speech by President Ursula von der Leyen.

Polish MEP Michał Kobosko described the event as a “red alert for all of us in Europe,” emphasizing the widespread concern over Russia’s escalating actions. Fellow lawmakers, including Italian MEP Brando Benefei, echoed these sentiments, stressing that Russia’s threats “are real” and should not be underestimated.

The primary concern among EU officials is the potential for Russia’s aggression to draw Europe into a direct conflict. Attention is now focused on the White House, with many hoping for a robust response from the United States, a traditional strong ally of Poland, to de-escalate the volatile situation and reinforce European security.
