Amjad Al Shawa, a veteran humanitarian aid coordinator and director of the Palestinian NGO Network, has issued a dire warning from northern Gaza, detailing a catastrophic food crisis where even basic necessities are unattainable. Speaking on July 28, Al Shawa described a collapsed food system exacerbated by restrictions, leaving his own family, like many others, struggling for survival on a single, meager meal a day.

Al Shawa recounted the exorbitant cost of food, with a kilo of flour priced at approximately $20 and sugar at $120. Fresh produce, milk, and meat have vanished, leading to widespread hunger, even among aid workers. He highlighted the heartbreaking situation of 55,000 babies whose mothers cannot breastfeed and for whom no milk is available, forcing some to boil rice as a substitute.

His harrowing account comes as international monitors, including the UN-backed IPC classification, warn that famine could be declared in parts of Gaza imminently, with over 470,000 people living under “catastrophic” hunger conditions. Al Shawa fears thousands could succumb to starvation in the coming days if comprehensive aid — encompassing food, water, hygiene, and medicine — is not urgently delivered. He described the situation as “engineered starvation,” emphasizing the critical need for a full package of humanitarian assistance to prevent further loss of life.
