Syracuse and Central New York are experiencing the peak of a record-setting July heatwave, with temperatures hitting 90 degrees today, marking the eighth such day this month. This continues a brutal stretch of unusually hot and dry weather that has pushed July 2025 to potentially tie for the seventh-hottest July since records began in 1902.

However, relief from the intense heat is finally on the horizon. A cold front is anticipated to bring significantly cooler temperatures by midweek, with highs on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday expected to hover around 80 degrees – a welcome drop from the recent scorching conditions.

Despite the impending temperature relief, the region’s severe dryness is set to persist. Syracuse has received only 1.7 inches of rain this month, about half the normal amount, with less than an inch falling in the past two weeks. This has led to the driest soil conditions in at least seven years in the region. While there’s a slight chance of light showers with Wednesday’s cold front, the National Weather Service forecasts less than a quarter-inch of rain over the next seven days, meaning residents will need to continue watering parched lawns and plants.
