New details have emerged regarding Bradford Gille, the suspect currently facing terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder following a violent attack at a Traverse City Walmart this past Saturday. Court documents reveal Gille had previously faced charges of disinterment, mutilation of dead bodies, and malicious destruction of tombs and memorials in Emmet County in 2016.

According to a court affidavit from 2016, a grave site was found dug up at Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey, with attempts made to access a casket. Gille reportedly believed someone was buried alive and sought to investigate. Psychiatrist Yatinder Singhal, M.D., described Gille at the time as “acutely psychotic,” stating he believed he was the antichrist and was talking about killing people. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder type 1 with psychotic features and previously schizophrenia. These 2016 charges were ultimately dismissed, allowing him to plead not guilty due to insanity.

The revelations about Gille’s past charges and documented severe mental illness come as authorities confirmed deputies were actively looking for him just hours before Saturday’s attack. The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office stated on Monday that they received a court order from the State of Michigan 7th Probate Court of Emmet County on Friday, instructing them to take Gille into custody. The order identified Gille as homeless with no known physical address in Emmet County, complicating efforts to locate him before the violent incident occurred.
