U.S. President Donald Trump has dramatically escalated pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine, announcing Monday that he is giving President Vladimir Putin just 10 to 12 days to halt hostilities. This new ultimatum significantly shortens the 50-day deadline Trump had previously set two weeks ago, pushing for peace efforts to show progress by August 7-9.

Speaking from Edinburgh, Scotland, Trump expressed frustration with the lack of progress, stating, “No reason in waiting. We just don’t see any progress being made.” He added that he is “not so interested in talking anymore” with Putin, despite previously indicating a willingness to negotiate. The shortened timeline comes amidst continued intense Russian bombardments, including an overnight barrage of over 300 drones and multiple missiles targeting Ukrainian cities, as reported by the Ukrainian air force on Monday.

The accelerated plan includes the imminent implementation of “severe tariffs” on Russia and potential secondary sanctions targeting its trading partners. Trump indicated a formal announcement could come as early as Monday or Tuesday. While expressing reluctance to penalize the Russian people, he emphasized the soaring death toll in the conflict, urging Putin to “make a deal. Too many people are dying.”

Ukraine has swiftly welcomed Trump’s tougher stance. Andrii Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential office, thanked Trump, stating on Telegram, “Putin understands only strength — and that has been conveyed clearly and loudly.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly shares this sentiment.

The latest Russian attacks on Monday included a drone strike that injured eight people, including a 4-year-old girl, in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, and caused a fire in Kropyvnytskyi. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces struck a Ukrainian air base and an ammunition depot in western Ukraine with long-range weapons.
