Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense reported a massive overnight assault by Russia, involving nearly 600 attack drones and over two dozen cruise missiles, resulting in at least two fatalities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the deaths occurred in Chernivtsi, with approximately 20 more people injured across a wide swathe of the country, from Kharkiv in the east to Lviv in the west.

Ukrainian forces claim to have successfully intercepted 319 drones and 25 missiles, while an additional 258 drones were neutralized by electronic warfare systems. Moscow’s Ministry of Defense stated its strikes targeted Ukrainian defense industry facilities and a military airfield, using long-range precision weapons and drones.

The intense bombardment, which occurred on July 12, marks an escalation in Russia’s recent campaign of nighttime strikes, which have seen a surge in the number of projectiles launched. President Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, urging international partners for stronger sanctions against countries aiding Russia’s drone production and oil trade, and reiterating calls for more advanced air defense systems to protect Ukrainian lives. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal highlighted that Western Ukraine bore the brunt of this latest assault, emphasizing that the enemy shows no signs of relenting.
