Ford has initiated a massive safety recall impacting more than 850,000 vehicles across the U.S. The urgent action addresses a critical defect where the low-pressure fuel pump may fail, potentially causing engines to stall unexpectedly while driving, which significantly increases the risk of a crash.

Details of the extensive recall were published this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The affected models span a wide range of Ford and Lincoln vehicles from recent model years, including certain 2021-2023 Ford Broncos, Explorers, F-150s, F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, and 2022 Expeditions. Lincoln models impacted are select 2021-2023 Aviators and 2021-2022 Navigators, along with some 2021-2022 Ford Mustangs.

Affected owners are slated to receive notification letters from Ford starting Monday, alerting them to the potential safety hazard. However, a definitive remedy for the issue is currently “under development,” as noted in the NHTSA report. While Ford states it is not yet aware of any accidents or injuries directly linked to this defect, owners are advised to watch for warning signs such as poor engine performance, a check engine light, or a decrease in engine power.

The recall report indicates that fuel pump failure is “more likely to occur” in warm weather conditions or when the fuel tank is low. Owners will receive a subsequent letter with instructions on how to obtain the necessary, no-charge repair once a solution is finalized and available at authorized dealerships.
