A Texas family is sharing their harrowing account of survival after being swept away by a sudden flash flood on the Guadalupe River on July 4. Taylor Bergmann, 19, recounted the terrifying early morning hours when rapidly rising waters inundated their Kerr County home.

Bergmann, along with Erin Burgess, 42, whom he considers his mother, and Burgess’s boyfriend, were trapped as the surging river flipped appliances and blocked exits. The family, including their dog, was eventually swept from their home and forced to cling to a nearby tree as the powerful current raged.

In a terrifying moment, Burgess’s boyfriend and the dog were torn from their grasp by the floodwaters, leaving Bergmann and Burgess to pray for their lives in the pitch black. Miraculously, after about an hour, the water receded. Daylight revealed that the boyfriend and dog had been carried to a distant roof and were safe, reuniting the family. Despite numerous cuts and bruises, all survived the ordeal, highlighting the sudden and destructive power of flash floods in the region.
