Hamas Agrees to Release 10 Captives Amidst Gaza Ceasefire Talks and Intense Fighting

Hamas has announced its agreement to release 10 Israeli captives as part of ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in the embattled Gaza Strip. However, the group cautioned that truce negotiations remain challenging due to what it described as Israel’s ‘intransigence’.
During Wednesday’s talks in Doha, mediated by Qatar and the United States, key sticking points included the urgent need for aid flow, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and concrete guarantees for a lasting ceasefire. Hamas official Taher al-Nunu stated the group’s flexibility in the latest proposal, aiming to protect Palestinians, halt what they call ‘genocide’, and ensure the unimpeded entry of aid until the war concludes.
The announcement comes as Israeli forces continue their bombardment across Gaza, with at least 74 people killed on Wednesday alone, including eight who died while waiting for aid. Health officials are desperately pleading for fuel, as Gaza’s hospitals, including Nasser Hospital, are on the brink of collapse, threatening patient lives.
Despite the prospect of a deal, Israel has launched intense missile barrages on densely populated residential areas in Gaza City, with reports of ‘quake bombs’ causing widespread destruction. A major assault also targeted northern Gaza, following a Hamas attack that killed five Israeli soldiers on Tuesday. Residents in northern Gaza, including the Shati refugee camp, have faced forced evacuations and devastating strikes, with one overnight attack killing at least 30 people, many of them children.
