Threads Launches Direct Messaging Globally, Bolstering Independence from Instagram

Instagram’s text-based app, Threads, has officially begun rolling out its highly anticipated direct messaging (DM) feature to users worldwide, starting Tuesday, July 1, 2025. This pivotal update allows users to communicate privately within the app without needing to switch to Instagram, marking a significant step in Threads’ evolution as a standalone platform.
At launch, Threads DMs offer essential functionalities, including one-on-one chats, preset emoji reactions, and options to report spam or mute conversations. While more advanced features like group messaging and inbox filters are slated for future releases, the current rollout aims to facilitate direct connections and spontaneous conversations within the app’s burgeoning community. The feature is available to users aged 18 and above in most markets, with initial exceptions including Japan, Australia, the U.K., and the EU.
The introduction of DMs positions Threads as a more direct competitor to other text-centric social platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky. However, a key distinction noted by Threads VP of Product, Emily Dalton Smith, is the app’s current lack of end-to-end encryption for its direct messages. Smith stated, “We’re not encrypting our DMs. It’s really about just connecting directly and talking to people about whatever is happening now, which I think makes encryption less core to the experience.”
Meta emphasizes that Threads is increasingly fostering an “interest graph” distinct from Instagram’s “social graph.” Over a third of daily Threads users have less than 50% overlap with their Instagram connections, indicating a unique community forming around shared interests and perspectives. This growing divergence is prompting Meta to explore new login methods, including Facebook accounts or Threads-only accounts, and web access without requiring a login, further solidifying the app’s independent identity.
In addition to DMs, Threads is also introducing a new visual element called “highlighter,” designed to emphasize interesting perspectives and trending conversations. While monetization remains focused on ads, Meta continues to leverage AI in the background for features like trending topic summaries. With 350 million monthly active users, Threads is rapidly growing and continues to build out its roadmap based on community feedback, aiming to enhance discovery and engagement within its diverse user base.
