Two Idaho firefighters were tragically killed and a third injured after being ambushed by a gunman while responding to a brush fire near Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene. Authorities have confirmed that the suspected lone shooter has been found deceased near the scene, and officials believe there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The incident began on June 29, 2025, when a brush fire was reported. Firefighters arriving at the scene around 2 p.m. were immediately met with gunfire. Two firefighters, one from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and another from Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, succumbed to their injuries. A third firefighter, who underwent surgery, is reported to be in stable condition.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris stated during a press conference that over 300 law enforcement officers responded to the volatile situation, engaging in a gun exchange with the suspect. At approximately 7:40 p.m., deputies located a deceased man with a gun nearby, who they believe to be the sole assailant. While the body has not been formally identified and a motive remains unknown, deputies suspect the shooter intentionally set the fire to lure first responders.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) condemned the “heinous act of violence,” confirming the deaths of their “brothers” and asking for prayers for the victims, their families, and law enforcement. Idaho Governor Brad Little also issued a statement, calling the incident a “heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.”

Following the discovery of the suspect, the shelter-in-place order for the area was lifted. Fire crews are now able to access and manage the brush fire, which has burned approximately 20 acres on Canfield Mountain. The community mourns the loss of the fallen heroes as investigations continue into the full circumstances of this tragic event.
