Coldplay frontman Chris Martin sparked fresh debate during the band’s final Wembley Stadium show in London on Friday, dedicating a song to the family of recently slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The dedication comes just days after Kirk was fatally shot in Utah and as authorities confirmed the arrest of a suspect in his murder.

Addressing the crowd before performing ‘Fix You,’ Martin encouraged fans to “send love anywhere you wanna send it in the world… You can send this to your brother or your sister. You can send it to the families of people who’ve been going through terrible stuff. You can send it to Charlie Kirk’s family.”

Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist, Trump ally, and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was taken into custody on Friday, the same day as Coldplay’s concert.

The gesture has elicited mixed reactions, especially given Kirk’s past public disdain for Coldplay, having once stated he’d “rather be caught dead than be at a Coldplay concert.” The band’s consistent message of universal love, as articulated by Martin in a previous Rolling Stone interview, continues to be a focal point amidst such politically charged events.
