New details have emerged regarding the fatal shooting of an undocumented father by an ICE agent in Franklin Park, Illinois. The attorney for Silvero Villegas-Gonzalez, Manuel Cardenas, asserts that his client had no criminal background, contradicting initial statements from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

DHS and ICE had stated their agents were targeting Villegas-Gonzalez for arrest, claiming he was a criminal in the country illegally. However, Cardenas disputes this, stating Villegas-Gonzalez’s record only included minor traffic violations between 2010 and 2019, such as speeding and issues with his driver’s license and insurance. Cardenas emphasized that none of these cases involved criminal violence and were favorably resolved.

According to DHS, an ICE agent fatally shot Villegas-Gonzalez after he allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to drive his car into agents. The incident occurred shortly after Villegas-Gonzalez had dropped his two sons at school. His family has since shared a photo on a GoFundMe page following his death.

Cardenas expressed shock and disbelief, stating the allegations did not align with the person he knew, describing Villegas-Gonzalez as respectful, hardworking, and compliant with legal requirements. He is calling for a full investigation into the shooting to prevent similar tragedies. It remains unclear whether body camera footage of the incident exists, as not all federal agents are mandated to wear them. The FBI’s Chicago Field Office has confirmed its involvement in the investigation.
