Staffordshire resident Steve Bagley, a lifelong enthusiast, is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic Super Mario Bros. by unveiling his extensive and highly valuable collection of Mario memorabilia. Bagley, who was just five years old when the groundbreaking game first launched in September 1985, has amassed what he believes to be one of the world’s most comprehensive collections dedicated to the beloved Nintendo character.

Bagley, an NHS worker who also curates the “Mario Museum” website, has invested “many, many thousands” over the decades, resulting in a treasure trove that includes nearly 500 games. His collection boasts rare 1980s titles, every console released over the years, antique playing cards from Nintendo’s early days, and even the signature of Mario’s creator. He describes the collection as “quite valuable and varied,” with particular interest in obscure, hard-to-find titles.

To mark Super Mario Bros.’ enduring legacy, Bagley has been engaging fans with a 40-day countdown of Mario game formats on social media. The highlight of his anniversary celebration will be an online showcase this Saturday, where he plans to unveil his full collection – a display he hasn’t presented in its entirety for over 30 years. “It’s the first time I’ve unveiled the full collection in over 30 years, so that should be really exciting for Nintendo fans,” he stated, emphasizing Mario’s significance in social history and its continued growth beyond mere nostalgia.
