Tonight, September 7th, 2025, and into the early hours of September 8th, a spectacular total lunar eclipse, famously known as a ‘blood moon,’ is unfolding. Skygazers across large parts of Asia, western Australia, and eastern Europe are poised to witness Earth’s shadow sweep across the lunar disk, transforming our natural satellite into a breathtaking deep red.

This celestial event occurs as Earth positions itself directly between the moon and the sun, temporarily bathing the entire lunar surface in its shadow. The moon’s ruddy glow is a result of scattered sunlight from every sunrise and sunset on Earth being refracted onto its surface.

The eclipse phases began at 11:28 a.m. EDT (1528 GMT) on September 7th with the subtle penumbral shadow. The more dramatic partial eclipse, as the moon enters Earth’s darker umbral shadow, commenced at 12:27 p.m. EDT (1627 GMT). The pinnacle of the event, ‘totality,’ during which the moon will be fully immersed in the deepest part of Earth’s shadow and display its vivid red hue, is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. EDT (1730 GMT) and will last for approximately 82 minutes. Maximum eclipse is expected at 2:11 a.m. EDT (1811 GMT).

Crucially, a lunar eclipse is safe to observe directly with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope, requiring no specialized protective eyewear unlike a solar eclipse. For those outside the primary viewing areas or unable to witness it firsthand, numerous free livestreams are available to ensure everyone can experience this stunning ‘blood moon’ spectacle.
