Kyiv’s cabinet building was among the targets of Russia’s most extensive drone and missile attack of the war, launched overnight into Sunday, September 7, 2025, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The unprecedented barrage involved 810 drones and 13 missiles, with Ukrainian air defenses claiming to have intercepted 747 drones and four missiles. Nine missiles and 54 drones impacted 33 locations across the country, making it Russia’s largest assault to date, surpassing a previous attack on July 9.

Tragically, at least two people were killed in Kyiv, with a total of eight civilians dead and 59 injured nationwide from the attacks. Impacts were also reported in Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, and Odesa regions. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed damage to the “roof and upper floors” of the cabinet building in Kyiv’s historic Pecherskyi district, where rescue efforts are actively underway.

Both President Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Svyrydenko issued urgent appeals to the international community for an immediate response and increased military assistance. Zelenskyy condemned the killings as a “deliberate crime” and a “prolongation of the war,” urging the implementation of agreements made in Paris with European leaders and U.S. President Donald Trump. French President Emmanuel Macron echoed concerns, stating Moscow was “locking itself ever deeper into the logic of war and terror.”

The overnight assault prompted NATO fighter jets in Poland to scramble, with Polish forces reaching maximum readiness. Russia’s Defense Ministry, however, claimed its “massive strike” targeted Ukrainian facilities for drone production, assembly, repair, storage, and launch, as well as military air bases, stating it shot down 69 Ukrainian drones. Incidents related to downed drones were also reported in Russia’s Krasnodar, Voronezh, and Belgorod regions, resulting in injuries and damage.
