These individuals, often freelancers, fine-tune chatbots like Grok and ChatGPT, teaching them to sound human, navigate ethical dilemmas, and avoid harmful responses. However, this burgeoning industry, while offering lucrative opportunities for some, is also marked by significant instability, ethical quandaries, and recent seismic shifts in the tech landscape.
Freelancers like Serhan Tekkılıç, a 28-year-old artist from Istanbul, found flexible work training Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot through platforms such as Outlier, owned by Scale AI. Tekkılıç recounts the surreal nature of prompts, from imagining life on Mars to discussing profound emotions, earning up to $1,500 on good weeks. Similarly, Northwestern graduate Isaiah Kwong-Murphy earned over $50,000 in six months through red-teaming tasks, intentionally provoking chatbots to identify and correct harmful outputs. Leo Castillo, an account manager from Guatemala, supplemented his income by recording conversations, finding projects like Xylophone well-paying at around $70 per good night.
Despite the potential for high earnings, the work is highly unpredictable. Contractors describe it as “akin to gambling,” with sudden pay rate reductions and projects drying up without explanation. In March, Kwong-Murphy’s hourly rate plummeted from $50 to $15. Castillo experienced a drop in performance ratings when Outlier shifted to group-based evaluations, impacting his access to new tasks. An Outlier spokesperson attributed pay changes to project-specific requirements, denying platform-wide adjustments and stating group ratings were swiftly corrected to individual assessments.
Beyond financial instability, AI trainers frequently encounter disturbing content. Workers like Krista Pawloski, a veteran data annotator, describe flagging racist content or being incentivized to prompt chatbots to suggest murder or sexual assault. Tekkılıç also recalls dealing with “really dark topics” to ensure AI models didn’t provide harmful advice. Many also express frustration over a lack of transparency, unsure whether their work on facial recognition or satellite imagery is for benign purposes or more sinister applications, often bound by strict nondisclosure agreements.
The industry is undergoing a significant transformation. In June, Meta acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI, Outlier’s parent company. This move triggered widespread panic among contractors as dashboards went empty and projects for major clients like Google, OpenAI, and xAI were paused indefinitely. While Scale AI stated project pauses were unrelated to the Meta investment, many interpret it as a sign of consolidation and a shift towards Big Tech firms bringing more AI training in-house.
Furthermore, the rise of advanced “reasoning” models like DeepSeek R1 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 is reducing the need for large numbers of generalist annotators. The demand is now shifting towards highly specialized talent, with platforms offering rates up to $160 an hour for doctors and lawyers to review prompts. This leaves many generalist trainers, like Tekkılıç who hasn’t had a project since June, contemplating the future of their roles and the broader impact of the technology they help shape.
