President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that his administration is actively exploring the reclassification of marijuana, potentially moving it to a less dangerous drug category. Speaking from the White House, Trump indicated a decision on the “very complicated subject” could be reached within the coming weeks.

The consideration involves rescheduling marijuana from a Schedule I drug—currently grouped with substances like heroin and LSD—to a Schedule III drug. Schedule III drugs are defined as having a “moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.”

This potential reclassification, initially reported by The Wall Street Journal, could unlock significant opportunities for marijuana research and provide considerable tax benefits to the cannabis industry. The Trump administration’s review follows a similar recommendation made by the Drug Enforcement Administration during the final year of the Biden administration.
