President Donald Trump has launched fresh attacks against former FBI Director Christopher Wray, accusing him of misrepresenting the FBI’s role during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. These accusations emerge just days after a federal grand jury indicted Wray’s predecessor, James Comey, signaling a significant escalation in Trump’s targeting of former officials.

On Truth Social, Trump claimed, without evidence, that the FBI “secretly placed” agents into the January 6 crowds to act as “agitators and insurrectionists,” contradicting Wray’s previous statements. He labeled the event “the January 6 hoax” and demanded an investigation into what he called “Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians.”

The indictment of James Comey on charges of giving false statements and obstructing justice marks an extraordinary move by the current administration to prosecute political adversaries. Trump has publicly indicated that more indictments are expected, telling CNN on Friday that others would follow.

While Trump alleges FBI agents acted as agitators, a Justice Department watchdog previously reported no undercover FBI agents were at the Capitol during the riot, though 26 paid FBI informants were present in Washington, D.C., that day. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries swiftly dismissed Trump’s claims as lies, asserting they are an attempt to deflect from his role in inciting the January 6 attack.

Trump, who nominated Wray during his first term (crediting Chris Christie for the recommendation), has intensified his focus on Wray, stating, “Christopher Wray, the then Director of the FBI, has some major explaining to do.” Wray resigned from his post before Trump’s inauguration in January, after Trump announced his intention to nominate Kash Patel as FBI director. In his farewell address, Wray emphasized the FBI’s commitment to integrity and following facts.

Trump has repeatedly articulated his desire for the Justice Department to act swiftly in bringing cases against his political opponents, stating last week, “If they are guilty, or if they should be charged, they should be charged, and we have to do it now.”
