Fashion designer Willy Chavarria has issued a profound apology following widespread criticism for cultural appropriation regarding the Adidas Originals ‘Oaxaca Slip-On’ shoe. The footwear, inspired by traditional Mexican huaraches crafted by Indigenous artisans, ignited outrage, drawing condemnation from figures including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Chavarria’s statement, released just hours ago, expressed deep regret that the shoe was “appropriated in this design and not developed in direct and meaningful partnership with the Oaxacan community.” The controversy escalated amid reports that the shoes were manufactured in China without consultation or credit to the communities originating the design. President Sheinbaum emphasized that “big companies often take products, ideas and designs from Indigenous communities,” with Mexico’s deputy culture minister confirming discussions with Oaxacan officials regarding “restitution to the people who were plagiarised.”

In response to the growing backlash, promotional images of the black, open-toe footwear have been swiftly removed from both Adidas’s and Chavarria’s social media platforms. The designer reiterated his initial intent to honor Oaxaca’s cultural and artistic spirit but acknowledged failing in collaborative action, stating, “This falls short of the respect and collaborative approach that Oaxaca… and its people deserve.” The incident underscores ongoing concerns about major brands adopting Indigenous designs without proper acknowledgment or compensation.
