In a swift reversal, OpenAI has announced plans to reinstate GPT-4o less than 24 hours after discontinuing it in favor of the newly launched GPT-5. The decision comes amidst a torrent of user complaints and emotional pleas, primarily voiced on Reddit, regarding the perceived shortcomings of the new AI model.

Users expressed significant dissatisfaction with GPT-5, describing its tone as ‘flat’ and ‘lobotomized,’ and lamenting a notable lack of creativity compared to its predecessor. Some even reported shedding tears over the unexpected disappearance of GPT-4o, highlighting the strong emotional bonds many had formed with the previous model. One user dramatically stated that GPT-5 was ‘wearing the skin’ of their ‘dead friend,’ GPT-4o.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman directly engaged with the frustrated community, participating in a Reddit forum where he acknowledged the outcry. He later posted on X (formerly Twitter), admitting he ‘underestimated’ the importance of certain traits GPT-4o possessed for users. Altman promised to bring back GPT-4o for Plus subscribers, indicating future availability would depend on user engagement.

GPT-5, launched for free to all users on August 7, was initially touted by Altman as a ‘PhD-level’ expert with enhanced capabilities in writing, coding, math, and science. However, its perceived lack of personality and ‘sycophant-y’ nature, despite previous attempts by OpenAI to address such traits in GPT-4o, led to widespread user disappointment. The rapid user response has prompted OpenAI to re-evaluate its strategy, with Altman emphasizing the need for user customization options in future models to cater to diverse preferences.
