Canyon Fire Update: Ventura County Blaze Reaches 28% Containment Amid Challenging Conditions

The Canyon Fire, a rapidly spreading wildfire that has consumed 5,370 acres near Lake Piru in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, is now 28% contained. Fire crews are relentlessly battling the blaze, which is fueled by bone-dry brush and extreme heat, making for a tough fight across rugged terrain.
Despite the challenging conditions, including low humidity and high temperatures, firefighters made notable progress through Friday, limiting the fire’s growth to just over 500 acres. This crucial advancement enabled command staff to downgrade evacuation levels in several zones, offering some relief to affected residents. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.
Andrew Dowd with Ventura County Fire cautioned, “This afternoon, we’re starting to see the temperatures come back up, we’re seeing winds start to pick up. There’s still a risk here. Fire is still burning, and we’re still going to be incredibly vigilant until we get this fire contained.”
Remarkably, no homes have been lost, a significant victory for the tireless crews. Local residents, like Hasley Canyon’s Mike Kavathas, praised the swift and effective response: “Our fire department out here in Santa Clarita is incredible. They do an incredible job. They’ve saved us a lot of times.” Evacuation warnings persist for several communities, and Castaic High School remains closed as a precautionary measure.
