DeKalb County is grappling with the tragic loss of Officer David Rose, 33, who was killed in the line of duty during an active shooter incident near Emory University’s campus yesterday. Authorities have confirmed the suspected shooter is also dead, and there is no indication of further suspects, ensuring the immediate safety of the area.

The harrowing events unfolded around 4:50 p.m. on Friday, August 8, when Officer Rose responded to reports of an active shooter. He was fatally ambushed, and rushed to Emory University Hospital where he later died. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum detailed that officers tracked the suspect to a CVS, where the suspect was found deceased after gunfire. The cause of the suspect’s death is currently under investigation.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens confirmed that no civilians were injured during the incident. While the motive and identity of the suspect remain undisclosed, officials anticipate more information will be released as the investigation progresses. The nearby Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters sustained apparent bullet damage, and a local daycare was safely locked down, with all children reunited with their families.

Community leaders, including DeKalb CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, have extended their deepest condolences to Officer Rose’s family, highlighting his service as a husband and father. They also commended the swift and coordinated response from law enforcement and first responders who rushed towards the danger.
