A DeKalb County police officer has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred Friday near Emory University and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta. Authorities confirmed the gunman is also dead, with no civilians reported injured in the incident.

The fallen officer was identified as 33-year-old Deputy David Rose, a father of two with a third child on the way. DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson expressed profound sorrow, noting the immense loss for his family.

The active shooter situation began around 4:50 p.m. EDT, prompting an emergency alert from Emory University for an active shooter at Emory Point CVS. Police quickly responded, locating the gunman deceased on the second floor of the CVS. The exact circumstances of the gunman’s death, whether self-inflicted or from officer gunfire, remain under investigation.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens confirmed that all 92 children at a daycare center on the CDC campus were safe, and the campus, which sustained multiple rounds of gunfire to its buildings, reported no injuries. The shelter-in-place order for the area was lifted after the gunman was confirmed dead and the threat neutralized. The FBI is coordinating with local authorities in the ongoing investigation.
