United Airlines is working to normalize operations today after a significant technology issue yesterday evening grounded flights nationwide, leading to over 1,000 delays and dozens of cancellations. The disruption, which began shortly after 6 p.m. ET, was attributed to a problem with the airline’s weight and balance computer system.

While the system issue was resolved within a few hours, the ripple effect left thousands of passengers stranded. United confirmed the outage was not a cyberattack and was specific to its operations, as clarified by U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was aware of the issue, which prompted ground stops at major United hubs including Newark, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, and Houston.

The airline stated it is providing meals and hotels for impacted customers as it works to minimize further disruptions. United Express flights and flights already airborne were not affected by the ground stop.
