President Donald Trump has reiterated his threat to impose federal control over Washington D.C. following the attempted carjacking and beating of Edward Coristine, a prominent figure from his administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Coristine, known as “Big Balls” for his role in slashing federal bureaucracy, was assaulted around 3 a.m. Sunday in the city’s Logan Circle neighborhood by a group of teenagers. Police intervened as the teens attacked Coristine after he pushed a woman, identified as his significant other, into their vehicle for safety. Two 15-year-olds from Maryland have been arrested on unarmed carjacking charges, with the investigation still active and additional suspects sought.

The incident has reignited long-standing Republican efforts to challenge D.C.’s autonomy. Trump, in a social media post and remarks at the White House on Tuesday, described crime in Washington as “out of control.” He warned, “If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore.”

While local officials note an overall 25% drop in violent crime year-over-year, they acknowledge youth crime, particularly carjackings, remains a serious concern. The District’s lack of statehood makes it uniquely vulnerable to federal intervention, often serving as a symbolic battleground in debates over crime and governance.
