New details surrounding the horrific 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students have emerged following the recent sentencing of Bryan Kohberger. Just hours after Kohberger received four life sentences plus 10 years on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the Moscow Police Department released approximately 300 documents from the investigation, offering the public its first look into the gruesome crime scene.

The newly unsealed police reports describe a horrific scene at the King Road home. Officers arriving found blood smeared on walls and floors, coating belongings and pooling by the victims’ bodies. Some victims were so covered in blood their additional injuries were initially difficult to discern, with faces so severely damaged they were unrecognizable. Xana Kernodle reportedly had “defensive knife wounds” on her hands, indicating an “intense struggle.”

On the third floor, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were found in a bed, their pink blanket soaked in blood, with a “large pool of blood” near Kaylee’s midsection and spatters on the walls. Reports noted Madison had wounds to her forearm and hands, along with a gash under her right eye, while Kaylee’s facial structure was “extremely damaged.”

Coroner reports detailed the fatal injuries: Ethan Chapin suffered a stab wound that severed major veins and arteries. Kernodle sustained over 50 stab wounds, primarily defensive, to her lung and heart. Both Mogen and Goncalves were stabbed in the lung and liver; Goncalves also had over 20 stab wounds, two brain bleeds, and injuries consistent with asphyxiation and blunt force trauma.

Investigators confirmed the murder weapon was a sharp, single-edged knife used with significant force, consistent with a KA-BAR knife Kohberger purchased online. The discovery of a KA-BAR knife sheath at the scene was a critical piece of evidence. Further details from the released documents include a Walmart employee’s account of a “white college-aged male” asking for a black ski mask weeks before the murders, and surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen’s description of seeing an intruder in a black balaclava. Additionally, Kohberger’s fellow Washington State University teaching assistant recounted observing scratches on Kohberger’s face and wounds on his knuckles in October and November 2022, which Kohberger attributed to a car accident.
