A deadly conflict has erupted on the Thai-Cambodian border, pitting a long-standing United States ally against a nation with strong ties to China. The clashes, which began on Thursday, have already claimed more than a dozen lives and forced over 100,000 civilians to evacuate, reigniting a territorial dispute that dates back over a century to French colonial rule.

The conflict underscores a significant military disparity, with Thailand possessing a considerably larger and better-equipped armed force compared to Cambodia. Thailand’s military, boasting 361,000 active-duty personnel, is three times the size of Cambodia’s and benefits from advanced weaponry. The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) highlights the Royal Thai Air Force as one of Southeast Asia’s best, while the Lowy Institute’s 2024 ranking places Thailand significantly higher in military capability within the region.

Thailand’s strong alliance with the US, solidified by the 1954 Manila Pact and its status as a major non-NATO ally, has provided decades of support for its defense programs, including joint exercises like the annual Cobra Gold. Despite these deep ties, Thailand has recently diversified its military policy, increasing engagement with China and developing its domestic arms industry.

Conversely, Cambodia’s younger military, established in 1993, heavily relies on China for defense equipment and support. Beijing has become a key supplier and has even developed the Ream Naval Base in Cambodia, capable of hosting Chinese aircraft carriers. Annual joint military exercises, such as the Golden Dragon, further underscore the deepening military relationship between Phnom Penh and Beijing.

Military analysts note that while Thailand holds a significant numerical and qualitative advantage, Cambodia’s forces may benefit from the terrain along the disputed border, potentially utilizing landmines and booby traps. This could lead Thailand to rely more heavily on its superior air power and long-range firepower to address the escalating situation.
