Bryan Kohberger has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students. The sentencing took place on Wednesday, following Kohberger’s surprise guilty plea on July 2 as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty.

The victims—Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—were tragically found stabbed to death in their Moscow, Idaho, off-campus home on November 13, 2022. Prosecutors had built a case using DNA evidence, surveillance footage, and cellphone records connecting Kohberger to the killings.

Judge Steven Hippler handed down four consecutive life sentences to the 30-year-old Kohberger, along with an additional 10 years for a burglary charge and $270,000 in fines. Judge Hippler emphasized the profound impact of the crime, stating, “Parents who took their children to college in a truck filled with moving boxes had to bring them home in hearses lined with coffins.”

Before the sentencing, emotional impact statements were delivered by the victims’ friends and family, directly addressing Kohberger. Alivea Goncalves, sister of Kaylee, branded him a “sociopath, psychopath, murderer,” while Xana Kernodle’s stepfather, Randy Davis, told him, “You’re gonna go to hell. You’re evil. You are going to suffer.” Kohberger remained expressionless and declined to speak during the hearing.
