Bryan Kohberger Sentenced to Life for Idaho Murders; Victims’ Families Address Killer

Bryan Kohberger has been sentenced to four consecutive life terms for the brutal 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students. Judge Steven Hippler delivered the verdict at the Ada County Courthouse on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, also imposing a maximum 10-year penalty for the burglary charge.
A somber atmosphere filled the courtroom as victims’ families directly addressed Kohberger, with one of the surviving roommates delivering an emotional statement for the first time. During the sentencing, Judge Hippler acknowledged that the motive behind the horrific slayings may never be fully understood.
Kohberger had previously pleaded guilty to all counts on July 2, as part of a plea deal that removed the death penalty from consideration. The victims—Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Xana’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin—were tragically stabbed to death in their off-campus home on November 13, 2022.
