Russia Unleashes Massive Drone Barrage on Ukraine, One Dead in Odesa
Russia launched an extensive overnight drone and missile assault on Ukraine, resulting in at least one fatality in Odesa and escalating a conflict now over three years old. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia fired over 300 drones and more than 30 cruise missiles.
The Black Sea port city of Odesa bore the brunt of the attack, with Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov confirming one death and five people rescued from a residential high-rise fire after being hit by over 20 drones and a missile. Zelenskyy added that six others, including a child, were wounded in Odesa, and critical infrastructure sustained damage in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region.
President Zelenskyy thanked international leaders for their commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities, emphasizing the importance of joint weapons production, drone manufacturing, and air defense system supplies. This latest assault marks a significant intensification of Russia’s long-range attacks, with recent barrages often exceeding monthly totals from 2024.
In related developments, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted 71 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated 13 drones approaching the Russian capital were shot down. Separately, Ukraine’s foreign minister accused Russia on Saturday of deporting Ukrainian citizens, including former prisoners, into Georgia without proper identification, leaving dozens stranded.
