The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated a significant immigration enforcement operation in the Chicago metropolitan area, deploying approximately 250 federal agents and 140 vehicles to Naval Station Great Lakes. An internal government memo, obtained by CBS News, reveals the Illinois military base will serve as a primary staging and command post for what is expected to be an intensified series of “removal operations” targeting individuals suspected of being in the U.S. illegally.

The request for military assistance, made by a top Homeland Security official last week, indicates a need for the naval station’s infrastructure, including a command post, tactical operations center, and storage for medical supplies and less-lethal munitions. Personnel and equipment began arriving at the base, located 50 miles north of Chicago, earlier this week.

This mobilization follows reports late last month of the Trump administration’s preparations for a major immigration enforcement campaign in Chicago, similar to operations that sparked protests in Southern California earlier this year. The internal memo suggests the crackdown could last for at least 30 days, signaling a prolonged federal presence.

While specific targets within Chicago remain unclear, the campaign is anticipated to be spearheaded by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). DHS stated its intent to pursue “criminal illegal aliens” in cities like Chicago, emphasizing that “nowhere is a safe haven” under President Trump and Secretary Noem. This deployment marks a continuation of the second Trump administration’s expanded use of military assets to support mass deportation efforts, a strategy that has faced legal challenges and controversy in other regions.
