Three Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies assigned to the arson explosives detail were tragically killed yesterday in an explosion at a law enforcement training facility. The incident, which occurred on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Biscailuz Training Center in Monterey Park, marks the largest loss of life for the LA County Sheriff’s Department since 1857.

Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed the fatalities and identified the fallen officers as Detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn. No other injuries were reported, and the scene has been rendered safe by the bomb squad.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, though multiple law enforcement sources indicate a possible connection to an explosive device brought back to the facility from a routine bomb squad callout on Thursday. This device was believed to be inert at the time. Authorities are now conducting a thorough search of the Santa Monica residence where the device was initially collected.

Sheriff Luna stated that the incident appears isolated with no ongoing threat to the community. Federal and local agencies, including the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), and FBI, have joined the investigation to determine precisely what led to this devastating event.

The department and the broader Los Angeles community are in mourning following this profound loss, with officials extending their deepest condolences to the families of the fallen deputies.
