Digital Foundry’s in-depth analysis of the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, Donkey Kong Bananza, has unveiled surprising technical compromises. Despite launching on Nintendo’s new console, the game notably opts for AMD’s older FSR 1 upscaling technology over NVIDIA’s more advanced DLSS, a feature seen in other Switch 2 launch titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Street Fighter 6. This choice has led to acceptable but noticeably softer image quality, with finer details often lost, particularly in docked mode where resolutions hover between 1080p and 1200p.

Beyond visual fidelity, Donkey Kong Bananza also struggles with performance. While improvements have been made since pre-release footage, the game still experiences framerate drops, exacerbated by double buffer V-sync. Handheld mode offers a somewhat better experience, benefiting from VRR, though even here, framerates can dip below the VRR window, occasionally hitting 30 FPS. Digital Foundry attributes these issues to the game likely running in a 60 Hz container, hindering VRR’s effectiveness. Despite these technical hurdles, the game itself is lauded as a significant 3D platformer for Nintendo.
