James Gunn’s highly anticipated ‘Superman’ film is making a powerful impact at the global box office, eyeing a domestic debut of $115 million to $120 million. The movie kicked off its run with an impressive $56.5 million on Friday, including $22.5 million from previews, signaling a strong reboot for DC Studios.

Internationally, ‘Superman’ has already accumulated over $100 million from 78 markets, contributing to an early global total exceeding $96.5 million through Friday. This strong performance positions it as a significant success, marking the first superhero film since summer 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to surpass the $100 million mark in its North American opening, and the first DC title to do so in eight years since 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’.

The $225 million tentpole is on track to potentially surpass Zack Snyder’s 2013 ‘Man of Steel’ ($116.7 million) to become the biggest domestic launch ever for a solo Superman movie, not adjusted for inflation. It also stands as only the third Hollywood title of 2025 to break the $100 million barrier in its debut, following ‘A Minecraft Movie’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’.

Critics and audiences have embraced the film, evident in its A- CinemaScore and stellar Rotten Tomatoes scores (94% audience, 82% critics), suggesting strong word-of-mouth will contribute to its continued success. Starring David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, the film marks James Gunn’s first DC entry since taking over leadership of the superhero label in November 2022.

Other films also performing well at the box office this weekend include ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, set to reach $230.9 million domestically by Sunday, and ‘F1: The Movie’, which is nearing the $140 million mark in North America.
