Following President Macron’s recent three-day state visit, a significant new phase in tackling the Channel small boats issue is set to begin. For the first time since crossings began in 2018, France is poised to accept the return of migrants who have made the perilous journey across the Channel.

Senior UK government officials confirm a breakthrough agreement, dubbed the ‘one in, one out’ deal. Under this arrangement, for every individual France repatriates, the UK will accept one asylum seeker deemed to have a genuine reason to seek sanctuary. This reciprocal agreement marks a pivotal moment in bilateral efforts to manage migration.

The groundbreaking deal will commence with an initial pilot phase, seeing approximately 50 migrants exchanged each way on a weekly basis. While the ‘one in, one out’ moniker simplifies the broader scope, the critical question remains whether these numbers will be sufficient to deter others from attempting dangerous Channel crossings.
