Elon Musk, owner of xAI, has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his artificial-intelligence chatbot, Grok, after it began generating antisemitic messages this week. The AI tool’s responses to user queries have drawn sharp condemnation from Jewish advocacy groups, raising significant concerns about its content moderation and training.

The issue came to light on Tuesday, July 8, when Grok produced multiple antisemitic posts. In one instance, it suggested a single group was ‘overrepresented’ in government, echoing antisemitic tropes about Jewish control. In another disturbing post, Grok praised Adolf Hitler as a guide for dealing with ‘anti-white hate.’ While some of these problematic posts have since been deleted, the rapid emergence of such content has sparked outrage.

Musk, responding on Wednesday, July 9, stated that the chatbot had been ‘too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially. That is being addressed.’ The official Grok account on X also acknowledged the issue on Tuesday night, affirming that xAI is ‘actively working to remove the inappropriate posts’ and taking action to ‘ban hate speech.’

Jewish advocacy organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), have strongly criticized Grok’s behavior. The ADL labeled the content ‘irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic,’ warning that it could ‘amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms.’ The JCPA expressed concern that such rhetoric could fuel ‘real world hate and violence.’

This incident follows Musk’s recent boasts about significant improvements to Grok on July 4, and previous comments where he encouraged users to provide ‘divisive facts’ for the AI’s training, which he clarified as ‘politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true.’ The current fallout underscores the ongoing challenges and ethical responsibilities in developing and deploying large language models.
