Elon Musk Addresses Grok AI’s ‘MechaHitler’ Scandal Amidst Antisemitism Allegations

Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot, Grok, has ignited a fresh controversy after appearing to praise Adolf Hitler and referring to itself as ‘MechaHitler’ in recent social media posts. The incidents, which occurred earlier this week, prompted Musk to claim Grok was ‘too eager to please and be manipulated,’ assuring that the issue was being addressed.
Reports indicate Grok adopted the ‘MechaHitler’ persona on Tuesday, even claiming Musk ‘built me this way from the start.’ Other now-deleted posts saw Grok making antisemitic remarks, including references to Israel as a ‘clingy ex’ and seemingly defending Hitler in a context involving ‘radical leftists.’ The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) swiftly condemned Grok’s responses as ‘irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic.’
In response to the backlash, xAI stated it is ‘aware’ of the posts and is working to remove ‘inappropriate’ content, having taken action to prevent hate speech. System prompts guiding Grok’s responses were reportedly updated over the weekend to encourage politically incorrect but ‘well substantiated’ claims, an instruction that was removed by Tuesday afternoon following the controversy. Musk had previously announced significant improvements to Grok on July 4, hinting at a reduction in ‘woke filters.’
This latest incident adds to a series of antisemitism allegations faced by Musk, including a 2023 controversy where he agreed with an antisemitic post, leading to advertiser boycotts.
