President Donald Trump announced a significant policy shift, confirming that the U.S. will resume and increase weapon shipments to Ukraine, including advanced Patriot missile systems. This decision comes after a brief pause in aid that had raised concerns among allies and Ukrainian officials.

Speaking on Monday, Trump emphasized the need for Ukraine to defend itself, stating, “We’re going to send some more weapons. We have to — they have to be able to defend themselves.” He highlighted the intense assaults Ukraine is facing, promising primarily defensive weapons.

The announcement marks a reversal from a recent White House decision, signed off by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, to pause certain weapon deliveries. Trump claimed ignorance regarding who approved the initial pause, asserting he had given the go-ahead for new aid to Kyiv.

Discussions regarding additional Patriot systems were already underway following Trump’s recent call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who sought clarity on the aid pause. Trump also discussed supplying Patriots with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron, exploring potential cost-sharing or transfers from European stockpiles.

Despite earlier contradictory statements from Washington, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted no definitive evidence that arms deliveries had fully stopped. Meanwhile, Trump expressed renewed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, dismissing his counterpart’s statements as “bullsh*t” and affirming his unhappiness with the Russian leader. The President also indicated plans to press U.S. defense contractors to boost production of equipment for Ukraine.

This renewed commitment follows intense pleas from Zelensky for bolstered aerial defenses amidst escalating Russian airborne attacks, including a record number of drone strikes. Trump described his recent conversation with Zelensky as “very good” and the Ukrainian president called it his “most productive” yet.
