Windows 11 Overtakes Windows 10 as Leading Desktop OS Ahead of Support Cutoff

In a significant shift for the desktop operating system landscape, Windows 11 has officially surpassed Windows 10 to become the most widely used OS. According to recent data from Stat Counter, Windows 11 now commands 52 percent of the market share, outstripping Windows 10’s 44.59 percent.
This milestone arrives nearly four years after Windows 11’s initial release, and just months before Windows 10 is slated to reach its end-of-support cutoff on October 14th, 2025. While Windows 11 previously led in PC gaming adoption since September, overall market penetration had lagged behind its predecessor until now.
Despite a slower adoption rate compared to Windows 10’s rapid uptake, which saw it reach 400 million devices in just a year, Windows 11 faced challenges primarily due to its stricter hardware requirements. Many older machines were unable to upgrade, leading Microsoft to implement prompts encouraging hardware upgrades.
As the Windows 10 end-of-support date approaches, Microsoft has announced options for continued security updates. Consumers can receive a free year of extended security updates by enabling Windows Backup and syncing their Documents folder to OneDrive. Alternatively, users can pay $30 for a year of updates or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points.
