North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has made a rare public acknowledgment of military losses, expressing profound grief over soldiers killed while fighting for Russia in its war against Ukraine. Speaking at an emotional ceremony in Pyongyang on Thursday, August 21, Kim paid tribute to the fallen, stating his ‘heart aches’ as he met with commanders and bereaved families.

State media KCNA released photos showing Kim pinning commendation badges on soldiers and on the memorial frames of deceased troops, each inscribed with their names. He reportedly told grieving families, ‘I don’t know how to express my regret and apologies for not being able to protect our precious sons.’

This ceremony marks a significant shift, as Pyongyang has previously been tight-lipped about reports of heavy casualties among its forces deployed to support Russia. North Korea began sending troops and equipment last year following high-profile meetings between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin, integrating the reclusive state into the European conflict.

While both nations initially denied deployments, they have since acknowledged Pyongyang’s involvement. Intelligence estimates suggest approximately 12,000 North Korean troops are currently in Russia, with plans to triple that number. Western officials estimate around 4,000 soldiers from the initial deployment have been killed or wounded. Ukrainian special operations forces have described brutal tactics employed by North Korean soldiers on the battlefield, including instances of extreme self-sacrifice.

Despite the acknowledged losses, cooperation between North Korea and Russia continues, with Pyongyang supplying vast quantities of munitions to Moscow. International observers are increasingly concerned about potential reciprocal transfers of advanced military technology from Russia to North Korea.
