Tropical Storm Chantal has made landfall along the South Carolina coast, bringing heavy rains and strong winds to parts of the Carolinas as warnings remain in effect. The storm, which intensified slightly before hitting the coast late Saturday or early Sunday, is now moving inland.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported Chantal’s center was near the coast, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph). Flash flood warnings are in place for the coastal plain, with forecasts predicting 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters) of rain, and isolated amounts up to 6 inches, through Monday.

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow local emergency advisories as the storm progresses.
